Can Statins Cause Pancreatitis?
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2002. About five years ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatitis and was hospitalized. One of my doctors said that the cholesterol-lowering statin Lipitor could have caused the problem, since I had none of the other associated problems that can cause pancreatitis. I had been on the lowest dose of Lipitor for only six weeks before getting pancreatitis. I know of two other people, both of whom had had their gall bladders removed, who got pancreatitis after taking the statin Zocor.
A few months ago, I had a recurrence of my pancreatitis. I have not taken any statins since going off Lipitor after my first pancreatitis attack. I wonder if taking statins can cause pancreatitis and whether anyone without a gall bladder would be well advised not to take a statin.

Craig Williams, PharmD, responds: There are some case reports of pancreatitis that may be linked to statin use, and the Food and Drug Administration considers it a possibility, but it is certainly very uncommon. In a large review of 14 placebo-controlled studies of statins, which involved nearly 100,000 patients followed for an average of five years, participants on statins had no more instances of pancreatitis than the control group.
You also ask about the possible effect of gall bladder removal on the risk for pancreatitis. Inflammation and irritation of the gall bladder (which is called cholecystitis) is separate from pancreatitis, but they can occur together, and one condition can affect the other, as the pancreas and the gall bladder are connected through the bile duct. I don’t know of any reason why someone who has had his or her gall bladder removed should be at a higher or lower risk for pancreatitis.
While cholecystitis is not listed as a possible side effect of statin therapy, most drugs that are significantly metabolized by the liver (like statins) get excreted partly through the bile. So it's possible that cases of cholecystitis and pancreatitis could occur when using medications that pass through the liver. Yet cholecystitis and pancreatitis also occur in people who are not on any medications, so the occurrence of either one while taking a particular drug doesn't necessarily imply a cause-and-effect relationship.
The best indicator of a drug reaction is improvement of symptoms after a patient stops taking the drug and recurrence of symptoms when the drug is being taken again. Each person responds individually to medications, though, and problems should be handled on a case-by-case basis with your health care provider.

I developed pancreatitis after @5 months on a statin to reduce my cholesterol levels. Let me tell you it almost killed me. Kidneys shut down, developed a massive case of gout, and the pain nearly wiped me out. I was in a well known and highly rated hospital, which didn't help at all. I discharged myself after 11 days and put myself into the hands of my doctor as an outpatient at an other nearby hospital.
Unbelievable pain, and a near death experience have kept me from any and all cholesterol medications. My doctor just mentioned that "sure, it was the statin that caused it". However, since I forced a checkout on this hospital, they capitalized the condition as ALCOHOL INDUCED pancreatit
Be careful out there!
I just started taking a diet
I just started taking a diet pill called fenphedra and i was wondering if it could cause pancreatitis? i was diagnosed with coronic pancreatitis after the birth of my second child. i was 20 when i was diagnosed. im now 23 and ive been in the hospital many times with it. they believe it was caused by galstones. i had it removed in 06 but i still have reaccurances 5-6 times a year. could this medication have anything to do with it??
I developed diabetes 3
I developed diabetes 3 months after being put on statins. I was told by my doctor the events are unrelated. I dont believe him.
Acute Pancreatitis & Stains
4 weeks and 1 day after starting Zocor, hospitalized with acute Pancreatitis. This was just last week and now I'm doing research.
Don't have high cholesterol, but high LDL and too low HDL. Want me to have consultation with surgeon for possible gallbladder removal?
Complications with leg cramps and loss of feeling periodically d
I am on Janumet and Actosplusmet and Lipitor. I want to get off these meds because I did not have cramps in my legs, loss of feeling (upper leg) and bladder infection until I started these meds. My doctor says its. It the meds. What should I do. I am at the mercy of my doctor but feel strongly it is related to these meds. I have type 2 diabetes and a history of atrial fribulation.
Treatment for acute pancreatitis
I was hospitalized from 12-1-11 to 12-9-11 for acute pancreatitis. The doctors kept me on versed and propofonol (sp?). I remember nothing from 12-1 to 12-6 when I awoke in the iCU fully restrained, feet, hands and head. I did not know where I was or why I was there. I could not talk but breathing was easy. Doctors had put something in my throat to breath for me and keep my stomach empty while my pancreas rested for 36 hours. I was terrified since I awoke an hour or two before they removed the breathing tube. A doctor would come in and say, "we will remove it in a little while." I did not know what they were going to remove. As bad as the episode I was I fortunate since they found a mass on my right kidney, which was remove on 2-14-12. Recovery for the next two weeks was remarkably pain free. Yes, it was cancerous but they assured me they removed all of it.
Pancreatitis
Just spent 3 days in hospital icu for unbareable pain just under my right ribcage and my upper back. After many blood test and exray and ultra sound was told I had a swollen gall bladder and pancreatitis. They thought it was caused from the drug Lisinop/hctz and told me to stop this drug. Just yesterday got a email from Medi watch that Lipitor can also cause pancreatitis. I was also taking Lipitor. I have now stopped all drugs in hopes of completely clearing up this pancreatitis as I am still having the pains. Have had the pains for 3 weeks now and would like some kind of relief. Any suggestions?
Pancreatitis caused by statin
My wife just left the hospital after nine days recovering from acute pancreatitis. We believe it must have been caused by the Pravastatin she was taking for the past severla months -- she takes no other drugs, except low-dose aspirin, which she started at the same time. And never had any problems previously. Possibly the combination made the pancreatitis even worse! You couldn't force her to go back on a statin!
pancreatitis and statins
I was just in the hospital for 3 days and I am convinced it was caused from starting pravastatin. I had a history of pancreatitis but after having a procedure done to remove gall stones about two years, I have not had an attack since then--used to happen every 2 to 3 months before the procedure (it is called an "ERCP"). Then about 6 weeks ago I started pravastatin and the hospital as well as myself are certain that is what caused it to come back--no other life changes could be connected to it.
Started Lipitor and
Started Lipitor and contracted pancreatitus w/in 6 months. Worst pain in my life. No one made a connection to Lipitor or statin. Continued on Lipitor and w/in 6 months had a 2nd occurance. Doctor made the connection. Discontinued Lipitor (started Zetia - a non-statin) and have not dealt w/ pancreatitus in 7+ years.
