Anticancer Drug May Fight Type 1 Diabetes
A dysfunctional immune system triggers type 1 diabetes, but the experimental drug 5-F-FTS shows early promise in fixing it. The drug deactivates a protein believed to play a critical role in diabetes development and boosts an immune cell that fights the disease. In a study of mice, only 17 percent of those on the therapy became diabetic, compared with 72 percent of untreated mice. Tests in humans of 5-F-FTS (5-fluoro-farnesylthiosalicylic acid) as an anticancer medication found it not to be toxic. The next step may be to measure its effectiveness in preventing diabetes in people.

Type 2 diabetes
Is there any hope to find a cure for type 2 diabetes in the next few years?
How to prevent type 1 diabetes
Although we all hope to one day find a drug that we can take to prevent all types of diseases, that day is still not here. For now, the only control we have over our "healthspan" is making sure our bodies are getting all of the necessary nutrients it needs. There have been numerous studies indicating the importance of both vitamin D and omega-3 in the prevention of type 1 diabetes. Make sure you are eating foods that a high in both vitamin D and omega-3, such as fatty fish.
Omega-3 and Type 1 Diabetes
This article stated that:"An 8 year study involving 1,770 children with an increased risk for type 1 diabetes, concluded that those children with a high omega-3 intake were 55% less likely to develop type 1 diabetes."
Vitamin D and Type 1 Diabetes
This article stated:"Children deficient in Vitamin D have an increased risk for developing type 1 diabetes, and one study found that children given a Vitamin D supplement were found 30% less likely to develop type 1 diabetes than those who were not."
