Double-Duty Diet
A diet created to halt high blood pressure may help avert heart failure, too, say the authors of a recent study. The researchers looked at the diets of more than 36,000 women between the ages of 48 and 83 and, after accounting for factors like age and medical history, found that those whose eating most mirrored the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet had a 37 percent lower rate of heart failure. The diet recommends plenty of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and whole grains but limits meats, fats, and sweets.
