E-Records, Canadian Style

Switching from paper to electronic health records may improve the health of people with diabetes. Researchers tested an interactive Web-based tracking system used in Canada. The system tracked 13 health measures—including A1Cs, blood pressure, and cholesterol—and posted up-to-date patient data alongside targets for people with diabetes. The system also offered online health tips and made automated reminder calls about doctor appointments and prescription pick-ups. After six months, 62 percent of patients using the e-system improved their health scores, compared with 43 percent of those receiving standard care.
