Hold the Meat

Going meat free can lower your body mass index and prevent type 2 diabetes, according to researchers at Loma Linda University who studied the eating habits of some 60,900 men and women. The group’s vegans (people who eat no animal products) and lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who eat dairy products) had half the risk of type 2 diabetes compared with nonvegetarians. Pesco vegetarians (those who eat fish and dairy products) and semi-vegetarians (who eat dairy products and, sparingly, meat) lowered their type 2 diabetes risk by one quarter to one third. The vegan set had a significantly lower average BMI than the nonvegetarian one. Thinking about going vegan? Make sure you’re getting vital nutrients by eating plenty of beans, fruits, and veggies.
