The Ideal A1C
It’s not unusual for people to have both diabetes and heart failure, which may complicate diabetes care. An A1C (estimated average blood glucose over the past two to three months) of less than 7 percent is recommended for most people with diabetes, but a study found that people who also have heart failure have a higher risk of death at A1Cs between 6.4 and 7.1 than at A1Cs between 7.1 and 7.8. However, at an A1C above 7.8, the risk of death rose again. It’s too early to know if this result should change A1C targets for patients with heart failure. Talk to your doc about the right A1C goal for you.
