An Early Advocate













Every year, the American Diabetes Association selects a young person with diabetes to advocate for the issues affecting people with diabetes across the country. Meet Chris Stokes, 17, ADA’s 2009 National Youth Advocate.

Education: High school senior, Minneapolis

Diagnosed: In April 1992, at 15 months old, with type 1 diabetes.

Interests: Sports, music, economics, science

A leader in: Wrestling. Chris is the captain of his high school team.

Future plans: To study epidemiology and public health in college.

As National Youth Advocate Will work to inform elected officials about the seriousness of diabetes, and to inspire other kids to fulfill their dreams. "Having diabetes
can be hard," says Chris. "But that doesn't mean you can't achieve your goals."

Encouraging

I'm 41 years old, newly diagnosed, and frankly scared. However seeing this young man with the spirit of advocacy to benefit other youths like himself is encouraging to me.
